They restrict people’s innate desire to move and explore freely—often with real, physical violence. They deny people the chance to seek safety from danger or simply build a better life. Modern capitalism, with its insatiable hunger for growth, relies on borders and nations to survive, because they enable, facilitate, and legitimize the exploitation of both people and nature.

But the idea of nation-states and borders also constrains our thinking. People from other nations are made to seem fundamentally different—even morally inferior—to our own. Governments exploit this mechanism to pit us against each other in wars and conflicts, to oppress and plunder other countries and their people. Yet, in so many ways, the only thing that separates us is what’s written in our passports.

We dream of a world where these borders are abolished, where they no longer matter. A world where we recognize ourselves in others, and they in us. A world where we can finally say: I no longer know nations. I only know people.
