Whales are marvelous creatures! They can communicate with each other over distances of hundreds of kilometers, can dive as deep as 3000 meters, stay under water for over 140 minutes and they hear using their lower jaw. Furthermore the blue whale is not only the largest animal on Earth, but is also the largest animal to have ever existed on Earth at any point.
After decades of excessive human exploitation, in 1986 an international moratorium prohibited the commercial killing of whales. Yet some governments (Iceland, Norway and Japan) ignore this ban and legitimize the killing of hundreds of animals under self-allocated hunting quotas.
