Vitamin D3 is important for a strong immune system, for your heart and circulatory, for healthy bones and teeth etc. Vitamin D plays an important role in the regulation of your calsium level. E. g., a lack of vitamin D may cause rachitis and osteomalacia.
Basically, your body can produce its own vitamin D, if your skin has enough contact with sun rays (UV-B). That's not a big problem in summer, but when the days become shorter and the sunlight takes a longer way through our atmosphere, you're not able to produce sufficient vitamin D.
There are few vegetables that contain a larger amount of Vitamin D, e. g. avocado or some mushrooms. Apart from that it's not easy to get enough vitamin D from foods.
You'd have to eat 150 g of avocado or 300 g mushrooms per day.
Vitashine D3 (2500 iu, that's 62,5 µg) is certified by the Vegan Society. If you think you need supplement, you should take one tablet/day. Can be sucked, swallowed or chewed.
