The Ahimsa tênis shoe is a vegan sneaker made from naturally-ocurring materials. In order to get a nice vintage look the outside canvas was tumble-washed. The shoes are made by a vegan company in Brazil under fair working conditions (no certification!).
The upper is made from 100 % cotton, only a thin piece of latex is used to cushion the tongue. The socklining is made of biolatex which is fully biodegradable. Last, but not least, the outsole is made from natural rubber.
The founder of Ahimsa is Gabriel Silva, a vegan who was unable to find nice, comfortable and ethically produced vegan shoes in Brazil. Mostly, vegan shoes are made of synthetic materials, usually based on oil residues. So he started a research to find sustainable materials for a whole product line. He was helped by his father Cisso Silva who'd been in the shoe market for already 30 years. After 6 months, Ahimsa was born.
Ahimsa products do not contain materials from animal origin, they onle use chemicals which are nonharmful to the environment and to the health of workers. Glue, for example, is always water-based. Some items are made from recycled fibers of PET bottles, or recycled cotton.
All the trash from the production process is recycled, too. E. g., the leftover canvas is collected to be made into new materials to be used for other products, without reusing water.
The staff of Ahimsa tries to find out the origin of each material used in production. They run their own factory only for Ahimsa products. Working hours are from 7h30 to 11h and from 12h30 to 17h, for a total of 8 hours a day and 40 hours a week, no overtimes allowed, no work on Saturdays. Ususally workers in Brazil work 44 hours a week.
All workers have a life insurance, they earn more than the average salary and they receive a supplemental wage in form of a credit card for groceries.
