The movie Blackfish tells the story of Tilikum, a performing orca whale that killed several people while living in captivity. Gabriela Cowperthwaite compiles shocking footage and emotional interviews with former orca trainers, whale researchers and witnesses of the attacks to explore Tilikum's extraordinary nature, the species' cruel treatment in captivity, the lives and losses of the trainers and the pressures brought to bear by the multi-billion dollar sea-park industry.
A story that challenges the viewer's attitude towards delfinariums or even zoos, but could also question how they look at other non-human animals. Unfortunately, this step (towards other non- human animals) is not taken in the movie.
Gabriela Cowperthwaite was inspired to this documentary by this article: The Killer in the Pool.
